Thermal Pad Repair and Care

Jul 14, 2021

If you are into electronics or do any work with electronics, you must have used a thermal pad. But now you might be wondering, what is a thermal pad made of, why are they important, and what are their uses. Well, this article will discuss these issues briefly so that you understand what they are and their uses better.

A: The main material that makes up a thermal pad or heatsink is silicon. Silicon is used as a semiconductor, a wafer-thin layer of silicon is combined with another base material, usually an aluminum shell, to make up a device that will conduct heat. This can be anything from a CPU to a heat sink for electronic components.

So, why is a thermal pad so important for your CPU or another device? It is because they affect your device's temperature-averaging capability, how fast the device can cool off, the maximum temperature that the device can achieve, and the service life of your device. Let's go over each of these more in detail so you understand their importance.

T heatsink: When the CPU gets hot, its heat conduction plate gets damaged. This is due to the fact that the silicon sheet on the heat conduction plate becomes damaged. You can fix this by placing some good heat conduction paste (you can get this at any hardware store) over the silicon sheet and soldering the damage back. This will help your device runs much cooler because the heat conduction will be better. This repair also helps your device last longer, because you will have a longer service life. This repair also helps your computer run much quieter.

Curing Agent: Last but not least, you have to make sure that you purchase some high-quality curing agents, such as Phenolic, Phosphate, Nitrate, or Nitrous Oxide. These curing agents are great for repairing your thermal pad when they get too damaged. A high-quality silicone patch like the one described above can help protect the microchips from damage.

Air Gaps: When your processor gets too hot, it may have some air gaps in them. Typically these air gaps are there because they do not use a heat sink. To fill the air gaps you have to use some kind of high thermal conductivity powder, such as gold-based spray paint. This will make sure that your high thermal conductivity pad does not get damaged by overheating.
