Washi tape for masking, or Japanese masking tape, first originated from Japan from the company Kamoi Kakoshi Co., Ltd. under the name MT masking tape. It all started in 2006 when puzzled Kamoi received a contact coming from a small selection of ladies who developed a book utilizing their industrial masking tape. The email stated that they can like to tour their facility before implementing another book utilizing their masking tapes. Confused Kamoi did not initially react to this curious email, and later on, received a package through the women; It contained colorful, beautifully-crafted pages all done in masking tape! Kamoi eventually agreed to allow women to tour their facility, along with their marvel and fascination with the tape making process filled Kamoi with great pride. Later, they received another book stuffed with more beautiful pages from 17 different artists, all utilizing their masking tape to make a masterpiece of design! The women requested that Kamoi create more masking tape colors. Kamoi would not hesitate from a big art exhibition in Tokyo and a lot of media coverage; they took the plunge and did start to develop creating the perfect rolls to use for crafts and design! They not only created many more colors but also designs which were cute and functional.
