Why is Polyester Tape, the most popular powder coating tape, used in the business setting today? The polyester tape was first developed many years ago for use in photo processing and splicing paper. It was found to be a great alternative to paper-powder coating masks. There are some other reasons that polyester tape is so popular: Low Cost. The polyester film can be purchased in rolls, sheets, and adhesives.
A disadvantage of using polyester tape is its low cost per sheet. If you need to cover a large area, it may be a wise idea to purchase several rolls of tape to cover the same area. It is possible to cut the material to the size of the sheet with nothing more than a utility knife. On the other hand, because the tape is quite flexible, it can be cut into the perfect length needed. When used with a silicone foam backing, polyester tape has excellent adhesive strength and durability.
Polyester film is a great product for applications where the sticky backing is important, such as with adhesive masking. It has excellent thermal and stickiness properties that make it a good choice for adhesive tape and splicing. Since it is also relatively inexpensive, it is a great product for packaging and distributing to multiple customers. Using a low-cost, double-sided polyester tape with a silicone adhesive backing provides great packaging and protection from leakage under stress.
Polyester tape is also an excellent alternative for wood fillers in applications where a fine layer of powder and/or sanding is required. Wood chips will adhere to polyester tape, providing an easy barrier against moisture and dust. This is especially important when sanding hardwood surfaces where moisture can quickly cause warping and cupping. If a company requires a wood filler that has a high degree of resistance to moisture, then using polyester tape is an obvious choice.
The use of polyester tape in applications requiring slight masking is also an obvious choice. Whether masking through the use of foam or a clear plastic shield, the use of polyester tape is a cost-effective solution. Even when masking through a material such as carbon fiber, where heat is an issue, the polyester tape is still a sound choice due to its high stickiness and thermal insulation properties.
Although polyester tape can be used in applications where stickiness is not a consideration, there are situations in which high performance but low density are necessary. In these cases, the use of a high-performance but low-density polyester carrier coating would be the best solution. Polyester tape is generally considered to be a poor choice when it is required to stick to a very smooth surface because the extreme wear and tear involved will tend to degrade performance over time. However, in applications where slip resistance and the need to adhere to a smooth surface are vital, the combination of high stickiness and low density is an ideal match.
